I’m standing in the elevator at the Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham, AL. The door opens to the lobby and I have arrived. The hype is right in front of me. I see the lobby packed with football fans sporting various team jerseys, bad haircuts, many of them mullets and signs begging for autographs from Tim Tebow or Nick Saban.

While the rest of the country has four seasons in a year, Alabama has five. We’ve tucked in an extra one between Summer and Fall. We call it “Football Season”. Our weekly activities are planned according to football schedules. And, even though it’s an election year, during this football season, most people will be more concerned about what team you support than what candidate you support. Each season brings football fans the opportunity to witness history in the making and to recall unforgettable seasons of the past.

I have said it many, many times!
“If I were king- there wouldn’t be poverty.”
“If I were king- we wouldn’t have a gas crisis.”
“If I were king- we wouldn’t have to worry about war, oil shortages, gas embargos, food shortages, hunger, pestilence, violence, and on and on and on.

As we celebrate another Independence Day, I wonder how many of us stop, if only for a moment, to think about how fortunate we are to live in this country and also the price that thousands of families have paid in the loss of their sons and daughters.

| Fellowship of Christian Athletes event to feature Rick Burgess as Speaker By: Amy Bliss Mason |

Every year the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, FCA, honors 10 area football teams who have been chosen as weekly winners of their Sportsmanship Award. This year’s event will be held Thursday, July 24th at CrossPoint Community Church in Gadsden. During a special banquet for the 10 teams, the “Team of the Year” will be announced.
